Choppies CEO Increases Stake with $1 Million Share Purchase. Choppies Enterprises CEO, Ramachandran Ottapathu, has deepened his commitment to Botswana’s largest supermarket chain by purchasing nearly 19.5 million shares, a transaction valued at approximately $1 million. The acquisition comes at a time when the retailer continues to stabilize its operations and rebuild investor confidence.

The purchase boosts Ottapathu’s influence within the company, which is dual-listed on the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE). His decision signals strong confidence in the retailer’s ongoing turnaround strategy. In addition, Choppies executive Vidya Sanooj acquired 11,688 shares, further reflecting management’s alignment with shareholder interests.

Choppies, a household name across Botswana and the region, has been focused on strengthening its performance after facing financial reporting challenges in recent years. The group has undertaken extensive restructuring, cutting costs, improving supply chain efficiency, and prioritizing core markets in Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and Namibia. These efforts aim to restore growth and sustain the company’s position as a leading retail player.

For the local business community, Ottapathu’s investment highlights renewed confidence in Botswana’s retail sector and its role in regional trade. It also underscores the importance of executive leadership backing their companies with personal capital—a signal that could encourage investor participation both locally and abroad.

Choppies’ ability to adapt to shifting consumer needs, expand value offerings, and maintain competitiveness will be closely watched by the market. As the retailer advances its turnaround, this latest development may serve as a catalyst for stronger investor sentiment and provide a boost to Botswana’s capital markets.
