Cheetah Cement to Invest $50 Million in Botswana Cement Grinding Mill

Cheetah Cement to Invest $50 Million in Botswana Cement Grinding Mill. In a major boost to Botswana’s industrial and construction sectors, Cheetah Cement Botswana has announced a US$50 million investment to establish a new cement grinding mill just 20 kilometres from Gaborone. The development marks a significant milestone in Botswana’s efforts to attract large-scale manufacturing investments and strengthen local production capacity.

The project, unveiled by Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) Chief Executive Officer Keletsositse Olebile during the Global Expo Botswana 2025, is one of five high-impact investment ventures showcased at the event.

Cheetah Cement Botswana is a joint venture between Whale Rock Cement of Namibia and strategic partners from China and Singapore, reflecting growing investor confidence in Botswana’s manufacturing and infrastructure potential.

Once operational, the new facility will have a production capacity of 800,000 tonnes per year — making it 26 times larger than the existing Matsiloje plant. The plant will produce 80 percent bagged cement for domestic use and 20 percent bulk cement for regional markets, positioning Botswana as a competitive player in Southern Africa’s cement supply chain.

The investment is also expected to generate substantial employment, creating 515 construction jobs — including 390 for local workers — and 120 permanent positions after completion.

In line with Botswana’s sustainability goals, the plant will utilise fly ash from Morupule and nickel slag from Matsiloje, promoting eco-friendly manufacturing while reducing the country’s reliance on imported cement.

BITC described the project as a strategic addition to Botswana’s industrialisation agenda, supporting infrastructure development, job creation, and regional trade integration.
