Business Botswana Warns Sudden Holiday Could Cost Economy P585 Million. Business Botswana has raised concerns that the unexpected declaration of Monday, 29 September 2025, as a public holiday could cost the economy an estimated P585 million in annual GDP.

In a statement, the private sector body said the disruption comes at a significant cost to businesses, particularly those in labour-intensive industries such as manufacturing, retail, logistics, and construction. These sectors face direct challenges, including stalled supply chains, contractual penalties, spoilage of perishable goods, and wages for non-productive hours.

The impact also extends to the financial system, where delayed payroll processing and suspended bank transactions risk straining business operations. For companies dependent on cross-border trade, the interruption adds another layer of complexity, particularly given the importance of maintaining regional competitiveness.

While affirming its support for the recognition of national achievements and milestones, Business Botswana cautioned that abrupt decisions on holidays undermine productivity and could weaken investor confidence. “Botswana must celebrate its successes in ways that do not disrupt economic momentum,” the organisation stressed.

The body has urged government to engage more closely with the private sector when considering such declarations. Alternative measures, such as celebrating during existing public holidays or through national events outside of work hours, were proposed as less disruptive approaches.

For entrepreneurs and businesses already navigating inflationary pressures and rising operational costs, the timing of the holiday presents a real challenge. Many are now forced to absorb losses or restructure operations to meet contractual obligations.
