BPC Restores Stability After Two-Week Load Shedding. Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) has lifted its two-week period of nationwide load shedding after stabilising generation at the Morupule B power station, a development that brings cautious relief to entrepreneurs and businesses across the country. The controlled outages, which began mid-month after a series of forced breakdowns, had placed added strain on operations in sectors ranging from retail to manufacturing.
According to BPC spokesperson Kefilwe Kebafetotse, the return of one of Morupule B’s major generating units has strengthened the country’s baseload supply, allowing the corporation to suspend the rotational power cuts. She said the restored unit is contributing to a more stable output, easing immediate pressure on the national grid.
However, Kebafetotse emphasised that the improvement does not completely eliminate risk. She noted that the power supply situation remains delicate, and unexpected dips in generation may still require the utility to reinstate controlled outages to safeguard overall system stability. For local entrepreneurs, this means continued planning and flexibility remain essential.
The two-week interruption had forced many small businesses to adjust their operating hours, invest in backup solutions, or temporarily suspend certain services. In particular, energy-dependent sectors such as hospitality, manufacturing, cold-storage logistics, and digital service providers felt the impact of the sudden disruptions. With load shedding now lifted, businesses are gradually returning to normal operations while monitoring BPC updates closely.
For Botswana’s commercial community, the partial stabilisation at Morupule B offers a window to resume productivity, reassess risk strategies, and prepare for potential future fluctuations. Many enterprises continue to explore alternative energy options, including solar solutions, to strengthen operational resilience.
BPC stated that continued monitoring of the grid is underway as efforts to stabilise generation across all units progress. The corporation has encouraged customers to use electricity efficiently during peak periods to help support grid reliability. As supply steadies for now, Botswana’s entrepreneurs and businesses are regaining momentum—while remaining mindful of the fragile state of the national power system.
