Botswana’s School Feeding Programme Sustains 400,000 Learners Annually. Vice President Ndaba Gaolathe has reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting learners through the National School Feeding Programme, which provides meals to nearly 400,000 students each year. The initiative is backed by more than P1.3 billion from the national budget, underscoring its scale and importance.

Speaking at the 11th African Day of School Feeding in Gaborone, Gaolathe highlighted that the programme has been in place for almost six decades. He noted that it is locally designed, sources food from within Botswana, and is professionally administered to ensure efficiency and sustainability.

The Vice President stressed that while providing meals is vital, nutrition alone is not enough. He emphasized the need to complement school feeding with access to clean water, adequate sanitation, and good hygiene practices to safeguard learners’ overall wellbeing and academic success.

Beyond its direct impact on students, the programme also plays a significant role in strengthening rural livelihoods. By sourcing food locally, it creates reliable markets for small-scale farmers and supports women- and youth-led enterprises. This approach not only sustains learners but also stimulates inclusive economic growth.

Gaolathe further noted that Botswana’s model demonstrates how strong national leadership, sustained financial commitment, and active community involvement are essential to advancing long-term development across Africa. He encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the programme remains a cornerstone of both education and food security.

he event brought together policymakers, educators, and development partners to reflect on the importance of school feeding initiatives in promoting inclusive growth. Botswana’s experience serves as a regional example of how integrated approaches to nutrition, education, and local economic empowerment can deliver lasting benefits.
