Botswana’s NDP 12 Targets Private Sector Growth and Job Creation. Botswana is entering a new economic era as the government charts a bold shift toward a private sector–driven, export-oriented economy through the Twelfth National Development Plan (NDP 12). The plan, which will run from 2025/26 to 2029/30, was the central focus of a recent Members of Parliament seminar held at Royal Aria in Tlokweng, officially opened by the Minister for State President, Moeti Mohwasa.

Minister Mohwasa described NDP 12 as a transformative blueprint designed to reduce the country’s long-standing reliance on government expenditure and diamond revenues. “Our current economic model is no longer sustainable,” he said, pointing to slow growth, fiscal constraints, and rising youth unemployment as key challenges that demand urgent reform.

The plan identifies nine strategic sectors to drive this transformation: Mining and Energy, Agriculture, Manufacturing, Tourism, Sports and Creative Arts, Infrastructure, Financial Services and Digitalisation, Healthcare, Education, and Social Protection. Cross-cutting themes such as governance, environmental sustainability, and peace are highlighted as foundational pillars for progress.

Under the theme “Building a Diversified and Inclusive Deep Economy for Sustainable Jobs,” NDP 12 sets out measurable performance dashboards and execution frameworks to enhance accountability and timely project delivery.
