Botswana’s Diamond Industry Shows Early Signs of Recovery. Botswana’s diamond sector is beginning to show positive signs of recovery, according to Minister of Minerals and Energy Bogolo Kenewendo, who highlighted improving demand in key international markets such as the United States and China.
Speaking in a virtual interview with Reuters, Kenewendo noted that recent marketing campaigns promoting Botswana’s natural diamonds – with a focus on provenance, authenticity, and sustainability – are helping to revive consumer interest. She added that inventory levels are gradually returning to normal, while disciplined supply management continues to support market stability.
Botswana and its industry partners have committed significant investment toward global marketing initiatives aimed at positioning natural diamonds as “real, rare, responsible, and developmental.” These efforts are designed to reinforce consumer confidence and ensure the long‑term competitiveness of Botswana’s diamond exports.
Beyond diamonds, Kenewendo emphasized Botswana’s growing role as an attractive destination for critical minerals exploration. She pointed to opportunities in copper, nickel, platinum group metals, rare earths, and uranium, noting increasing investor interest in the Kalahari Copper Belt as evidence of the country’s potential to diversify its mining sector.
The minister also underscored Botswana’s commitment to responsible mining, stressing that mineral revenues continue to support national development while conservation efforts safeguard wildlife and natural ecosystems. According to Kenewendo, these principles are key to ensuring that mining growth remains sustainable and beneficial for future generations.
The recovery signals a cautiously optimistic outlook for Botswana’s diamond industry, which remains central to the country’s economy. At the same time, diversification into critical minerals offers new pathways for growth, positioning Botswana to strengthen its mining sector and broaden its economic base.
