Botswana Unveils Draft National Development Plan 12: Private Sector, Digitalisation, and Industrialisation at the Core. Botswana’s Minister for State President, Hon. Moeti Mohwasa, has officially presented the draft National Development Plan (NDP 12), outlining a bold framework aimed at driving the country’s next phase of economic transformation.

The plan identifies seven key reform pillars that will guide national development and ensure long-term sustainability. Among these, the emphasis on putting the private sector at the centre of growth stands out as a cornerstone of Botswana’s future economic agenda. By prioritising business-led development, government aims to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurship, investment, and innovation.

Other critical pillars include digitalising the economy to enhance efficiency and competitiveness, and transforming the education system to ensure that skills development aligns with productivity and relevance in today’s labour market.

Job creation and poverty reduction also feature prominently in NDP 12, with the government reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and inclusive economic growth. The plan further emphasises industrialisation as a key driver for lasting structural change—an approach expected to diversify the economy beyond traditional sectors such as mining and agriculture.

A notable inclusion in the plan is the focus on strengthening transparency, accountability, and human rights–centric governance. This aligns with Botswana’s ongoing commitment to good governance and democratic principles, reinforcing public trust and responsible administration.

NDP 12 presents a vision that is not only reform-driven but also forward-looking—anchored on collaboration between government, business, and civil society. For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and private sector players, it signals a future shaped by opportunity, innovation, and inclusive participation in national progress.
