Botswana Unveils Diamond-Embedded Medals Ahead of World Athletics Relays 2026. Botswana has taken a significant step in its preparations for the World Athletics Relays Gaborone 2026, with President Duma Boko officially unveiling the event’s medals in a ceremony held at the Botswana National Museum.

The unveiling marks a key milestone as Botswana prepares to host the global competition, which will be staged on African soil for the first time. The event brought together government representatives, industry leaders, athletes, creatives, and members of the diplomatic community, reflecting the collaborative effort behind the upcoming international showcase.

Central to the announcement is the design of the medals, which will feature 120 pieces embedded with Botswana’s natural diamonds. According to officials, the diamonds have been sourced, cut, and polished locally, highlighting the country’s mineral resources and value chain capabilities.

Speaking during the ceremony, President Boko emphasised the authenticity of the materials used, noting that the diamonds are natural and originate from Botswana. He described the medals as carrying historical and cultural significance, linking them to the country’s identity and development journey.

The initiative has been supported by multiple stakeholders, including the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, the Ministry of Sport and Arts, and the Okavango Diamond Company. Their involvement forms part of broader efforts to position the event as both a sporting and economic platform.

Officials indicated that the medal design reflects more than athletic achievement, serving as a representation of Botswana’s broader development narrative. Diamonds have historically played a central role in the country’s economy, contributing to sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.

As preparations continue, Botswana is positioning the 2026 relays as an opportunity to showcase its capabilities on the global stage. The unveiling of the medals signals both readiness and intent, as the country moves closer to hosting one of athletics’ major international events.
