Botswana Unveils 2026/27 Priorities Focused on Private Sector Growth and Export Expansion. Botswana has outlined its national priorities for the 2026/27 financial year, placing strong emphasis on private sector–led and export-driven growth as part of a broader effort to reshape the country’s economic trajectory. The priorities are detailed in the Budget Strategy Paper, which sets out a framework aimed at fostering a more diversified, resilient and knowledge-driven economy.

According to the Strategy Paper, the 2026/27 agenda is anchored in strengthening private sector participation, supporting productive job creation and improving national competitiveness. The framework reflects a shift from traditional growth approaches toward a results-oriented development model that focuses on long-term economic outcomes.

The government has identified four strategic pillars that will guide implementation during the period. These include supporting private sector-led, export-driven growth and economic diversification; modernising and transforming infrastructure; accelerating innovation and digital transformation; and strengthening skills development together with human and social capital. Collectively, these pillars are intended to unlock productivity, enhance value creation and build resilience across key sectors of the economy.

The Strategy Paper further indicates that the 2026/27 priorities are aligned with National Development Plan 12 and Botswana’s “True North” vision under the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme. This alignment is presented as a way of ensuring consistency between short-term policy actions and longer-term national objectives.

Botswana’s long-term ambition of attaining high-income status by 2036 is referenced as a central consideration in shaping the priorities. The framework highlights the importance of policy coherence and targeted investment, with the aim of ensuring that development interventions are aligned with clearly defined national goals.

Overall, the 2026/27 priorities set out a structured agenda that places private sector participation, exports, innovation and skills development at the centre of Botswana’s economic planning, signalling a new phase in the country’s development approach.
