Botswana Tourism Promotes Community Empowerment Through Sustainable Tourism Workshop in Ghanzi. The Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) reaffirmed its commitment to community empowerment and sustainable development by participating in the Community-Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) workshop held in Ghanzi from 8 to 11 April 2025.

Hosted under the Ghanzi District Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), the workshop brought together stakeholders from various sectors to support newly elected board members of community trusts including Huiku, Xwiskurusa, Itangoo, and Au She Xla Ulu. The goal was to strengthen governance and equip participants with practical operational skills critical for effective trust management.

BTO’s contribution focused on Joint Ventures, highlighting their significance in promoting sustainable tourism and attracting investment to rural communities. The presentation offered insights into how local trusts can leverage partnerships with the private sector to create economic opportunities while conserving natural resources.

Several key institutions were in attendance, including the Master of the High Court, Local Enterprise Authority (LEA), Ngamiland Council of Community Based Organisations (NCONGO), Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC), Ghanzi District Council, and the Sankuyo Community Trust. Their presence demonstrated a strong multi-sectoral approach to fostering inclusive development and good governance within community-based initiatives.

The workshop reinforced the importance of collaboration between government agencies, civil society, and local leadership in advancing Botswana’s tourism and conservation goals. By building the capacity of community trusts, the initiative supports long-term sustainability and empowers communities to take an active role in managing their natural and cultural heritage.
