Botswana Tourism Charts Path for Sustainable Growth and Diversification. Botswana’s tourism sector is positioning itself as a central driver of sustainable economic growth, with the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) outlining new priorities at the ongoing NextGen Tourism Business Expo. Acting CEO, Mr. Justice Ofentse, highlighted the sector’s resilience and the significant opportunities it holds for entrepreneurs and investors.

Tourism has staged a strong recovery since the pandemic, welcoming over 1.18 million international visitors in 2023. With 2025 arrivals already on track to surpass pre-pandemic levels, the outlook is encouraging for businesses linked to travel, hospitality, and cultural experiences.

Traditional markets such as the United States, Germany, France, and Canada have now exceeded their 2019 arrival numbers, while emerging markets including India, China, Israel, and the Gulf region are showing growing interest in Botswana’s unique offerings. Within Africa, visitor numbers have tripled between 2021 and 2023, pointing to renewed regional momentum.

For entrepreneurs, these trends open opportunities in areas such as eco-lodges, adventure tourism, cultural heritage products, and digital travel solutions. Mr. Ofentse also pointed to strategic reforms underway, including simplified visa processes, expanded air connectivity, and bold destination marketing campaigns aimed at raising Botswana’s global profile.

He emphasized that the country’s competitive advantage lies in the harmony of its land, people, culture, and values. This foundation, he noted, makes Botswana more than a destination to visit—it is a place to connect with and return to.

As Botswana continues to diversify its economy beyond traditional sectors, tourism is emerging as a reliable growth pillar. With a clear strategy and strong post-pandemic recovery, the sector offers fertile ground for local entrepreneurs to innovate and create businesses that can compete on the global stage.
