Botswana Stock Exchange Ranked Second in Africa for Women’s Board Representation. The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) has been ranked second in Africa for women’s representation on corporate boards, according to the United Nations Sustainable Stock Exchanges (UN SSE) Africa Deep Dive Report. The study assessed gender balance in corporate leadership across 626 listed companies on the continent, placing Botswana among the top performers.

This recognition underscores the progress made within Botswana’s capital markets ecosystem in advancing gender equality, corporate governance, and inclusive economic participation. It also aligns with the objectives of UN Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5): Gender Equality, which calls for greater representation of women in leadership roles across all sectors.

The BSE has consistently worked with issuers, regulators, and market stakeholders to promote diversity and strengthen sustainable capital markets. By encouraging companies to prioritize gender balance at board level, the exchange is helping to build a more resilient and inclusive financial system.

Officials noted that the ranking reflects Botswana’s broader commitment to empowering women in leadership and ensuring that corporate governance structures are representative of the society they serve. The achievement also highlights the role of capital markets in driving sustainable development by embedding inclusivity into business practices.

The UN SSE report provides valuable insights into how exchanges across Africa are performing in terms of gender representation, offering benchmarks for progress and areas for improvement. For Botswana, the recognition serves as both validation of ongoing efforts and motivation to continue advancing equality in corporate leadership.

The BSE reaffirmed its commitment to deepening collaboration with stakeholders to sustain this momentum, ensuring that women’s voices remain central to decision-making in Botswana’s corporate sector and beyond.
