Botswana Startup Nkitsi Showcases Blockchain KYC Platform Poised to Modernise Identity Verification. A Botswana-built innovation is gaining attention after placing second at the Orange Summer Challenge 2025 Elevator Pitch. Nkitsi, a local startup, has developed a blockchain-secured digital KYC platform designed to simplify how organisations verify identities across key sectors.
The platform enables users to securely store and manage their personal information, while giving authorised businesses the ability to verify identities through API requests charged at P1.00 per transaction. To cater for offline use, Nkitsi also offers a digital card priced at P50, expanding accessibility for users who may not always be connected. The solution is targeted at Botswana’s 1.68 million consenting adults, positioning it as a scalable tool for both urban and rural markets.
Nkitsi is led by a six-member team: Steve, Marang, Antonette, Dadirai, Kgosi, and Bontle. The group is now seeking P1.5 million in seed funding to scale the platform and accelerate commercial adoption across financial services, telecoms, government agencies, and insurance providers.
For entrepreneurs and businesses in Botswana, the platform could offer a significant boost. By reducing onboarding time and enhancing data security through blockchain encryption, Nkitsi’s system aims to lower operational costs and strengthen compliance processes for companies handling sensitive customer information.
The innovation comes out of the Orange Summer Challenge (OSC), an annual initiative by Orange that supports youth-driven digital solutions addressing national needs. The programme continues to play an important role in expanding Botswana’s tech ecosystem by giving emerging developers and founders a platform to showcase and refine their products.
Nkitsi’s performance in this year’s challenge reflects the growing demand for secure, locally built digital infrastructure. As the team advances its funding efforts, Botswana’s entrepreneurial community will be watching closely to see how this homegrown solution positions itself within the country’s evolving digital economy.
