Botswana Stands Firm as Government Backs ODC’s Decision to Halt Diamond Sales. The Government of Botswana has declared full support for the Okavango Diamond Company’s (ODC) decision to halt the sale of diamonds after buyers offered prices below market value.
Minister of Minerals and Energy, Bogolo Kenewendo, confirmed the government’s position during the United Nations Kimberley Process meeting, stating that the move was necessary to protect the integrity and value of Botswana’s diamond industry. She explained that the decision to suspend sales came after buyers refused to meet the company’s reserve price, adding that Botswana would not compromise its standards or devalue its resources under market pressure.
“The decision to withhold supply was made to preserve the value of Botswana’s diamonds and prevent price distortions that could destabilize the global market,” Kenewendo said.
Her statement comes at a time when the international diamond trade is facing headwinds, including reduced demand from major markets such as China and growing competition from synthetic, lab-grown diamonds. Despite these challenges, Botswana remains one of the world’s leading producers of natural diamonds, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP and employment.
Industry observers note that the decision reflects Botswana’s long-term vision to maintain stability and ensure that its diamond trade continues to benefit citizens and sustain public investment. The move also signals to the global market that Botswana will continue to prioritize value over volume, reinforcing its position as a responsible and strategic player in the global diamond supply chain.
Entrepreneurs and businesses in the mineral and trading sectors are closely watching developments, as ODC’s stance may influence global diamond pricing trends in the months ahead.
