Botswana Social Enterprise Takes Digital Learning Innovation to Mogoditshane Communities. Botswana-based social enterprise Shekaka Gaa La Ga Mme has showcased its technology-driven education initiative through a community activation event in Mogoditshane, bringing together learners, parents, government representatives and local organisations.

The Shekaka Gaa La Ga Mme Market Activation involved learners from Solomon Dihutso Primary School, community members, the Mogoditshane Sub-District Council, the Ministry of Basic Education and Child Welfare, local non-governmental organisations and members of the media.

Founded by Tumelo Tricia Mokanye from Khakhea village, Shekaka Gaa La Ga Mme focuses on expanding access to education through technology, the inclusion of indigenous languages and digital skills development.

Its main offering, Rotlhe Adventure, is an offline-capable, gamified learning application designed to support curriculum-aligned education in African indigenous languages.

The application forms part of the enterprise’s efforts to make digital learning more accessible while incorporating local languages into educational experiences.

The market activation provided an opportunity to demonstrate the initiative’s approach to learning, engage with communities and establish connections with potential partners.

Support through business acceleration

Shekaka Gaa La Ga Mme is also participating in the Botswana Digital Innovation Hub (BDIH) Acceleration Programme, through which it receives mentorship, funding support opportunities, networking and guidance on taking its products to market.

The programme is intended to support the enterprise as it develops its operations and works towards expanding the reach of its educational offering.

The involvement of learners, parents, government institutions and community organisations at the activation brought together stakeholders with an interest in education and digital inclusion.

For the enterprise, community engagement forms part of its efforts to demonstrate its technology and strengthen relationships with the people and institutions that could support its development.

Expanding access to digital education

The initiative highlights the role of local innovation in addressing educational access and language inclusion through technology.

By developing an application that can operate offline and incorporates African indigenous languages, Shekaka Gaa La Ga Mme is focusing on two areas of its educational model: accessibility and culturally relevant learning.

Through Rotlhe Adventure and its participation in the BDIH Acceleration Programme, the enterprise is working to develop its offering and expand its reach.

The Mogoditshane activation provided a platform to showcase its work and bring community stakeholders into discussions around technology-enabled education in Botswana.
