Botswana Signs Strategic Energy Partnership to Strengthen National Power Security. The Government of Botswana, through the Ministry of Minerals and Energy, has entered into a landmark Strategic Partnership with international investors including Thirty-Five Global Links (TFGL), Mercuria Asia Holdings Pte Ltd, Ulsan Holding Anonim Şirketi, and Innovation Global Industries (IGI). The collaboration aims to advance Botswana’s energy security and strengthen its national infrastructure base.

The agreement aligns with the Botswana Energy Compact and supports the Government’s long-term goal of ensuring a sustainable, reliable, and affordable electricity supply for citizens and businesses. It forms part of broader efforts to reduce reliance on imported electricity and address ongoing operational challenges at key national power facilities.

Under the partnership, the consortium will work with Botswana to rehabilitate the Morupule A and B Power Stations, develop new generation projects that incorporate clean-coal and renewable technologies, and expand transmission and distribution infrastructure across the country. Once fully implemented, the programme is expected to add approximately 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of power generation capacity, positioning Botswana as a potential net energy exporter within the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP).

Leaders from the consortium described the agreement as a commitment to supporting Botswana’s Vision 2036 and National Energy Policy. They emphasized that the initiative will focus on sustainable development, innovation, and skills transfer, ensuring long-term benefits for the local economy.

The Government of Botswana reaffirmed that the partnership will contribute to job creation, technological advancement, and industrial growth—laying a foundation for future energy independence and economic diversification.
