Botswana Restricts Drone Flights Near Stadium Ahead of Athletics Event. The Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana has announced a temporary ban on drone operations within a 3-kilometre radius of key locations in Gaborone, ahead of an upcoming international athletics event.

The restriction will be in effect from May 1 to May 4 and covers the National Stadium Gaborone as well as the University of Botswana. Authorities have designated the surrounding airspace as restricted during this period.

According to the aviation authority, the measure is intended to support safety and security arrangements for athletes, spectators, and visiting dignitaries expected at the event. The temporary restriction forms part of broader preparations linked to the World Athletics tournament scheduled to take place during the same timeframe.

Officials have indicated that any unauthorised drone activity within the restricted zone will be subject to enforcement measures. This may include interception of the device and potential legal consequences for operators who fail to comply with the directive.

The authority clarified that only approved personnel will be permitted to operate drones during the restriction period. Accredited media and security teams with prior clearance are exempt, provided they meet the required operational and safety conditions.

The announcement serves as a formal notice to drone operators and the general public to adhere to the temporary airspace limitations. Authorities have urged compliance to ensure the smooth running of the event and to maintain safety standards throughout the designated areas.

The restriction will remain in place for the duration of the specified dates, after which normal drone operation regulations are expected to resume.
