Botswana Reaffirms Support for Diamond Industry Amid Tariff Concerns and Labour Compliance. The Ministry of Minerals and Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, hosted a stakeholder engagement meeting in Gaborone focused on the future of Botswana’s diamond industry. The session was organized through the Diamond Hub and aimed at addressing current challenges while reinforcing government support for industry players.
Minister of Minerals and Energy, Hon. Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, said the engagement followed up on discussions held in January, where it was proposed that the Diamond Hub evolve into a one-stop center addressing the sector’s broad needs. She emphasized the importance of efficiency and inclusivity in servicing stakeholders across the industry.
One of the pressing issues raised was the 37% reciprocal tariff imposed by the United States on Botswana’s diamond exports. Minister Kenewendo acknowledged the impact of this tariff, not only on direct exports to the U.S. but also on trade with other key partners, including India, Israel, Dubai, and Antwerp. She assured stakeholders that the government is actively evaluating the effects and will keep the industry informed as mitigation efforts progress.
Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Hon. Major General (Rtd) Pius Mokgware, addressed labour compliance within the industry. He raised concerns over some employers not adhering to national labour laws, reminding stakeholders that Botswana is a human rights-driven government.
He stressed the need for fair treatment of workers, noting that compliance enhances workplace productivity, profitability, and long-term efficiency. Employers were urged to align with labour regulations to promote sustainable growth in the sector.
