Botswana Positions Tourism as Key Focus in Envoys’ Induction Programme. Tourism has taken centre stage in Botswana’s diplomatic preparations as the Botswana Tourism Organisation (BTO) participated in an induction and capacity building programme for newly appointed envoys.

The programme, hosted by the Ministry of International Relations, is being held at the Botswana Public Service College from 19 January 2026 and is scheduled to conclude on 5 February 2026. It forms part of government efforts to equip diplomatic representatives ahead of their foreign postings.

Attendees include Ambassador Designate Zein Kebonang to Belgium, Ambassador Designate Lekoko Sylvester Kenosi to China, High Commissioner Designate Phillip Khwae to Namibia, High Commissioner Designate Jonathan Thuto Mahlanza to Australia, Ambassador Designate Boga Thura Manatsha to Japan, Ambassador at Large Professor Oatlhokwa Nkomazana, Consul General designate Ms Kutlo Chelenyane in Johannesburg, and Mr Sedirwa Kgoroba.

During a session themed “Tourism Diplomacy: Challenges and Opportunities in the Tourism Sector,” BTO presented tourism as an important component of Botswana’s economic diplomacy and international brand positioning. The presentation was delivered by Acting Chief Executive Officer Justice Ofentse.

The organisation outlined its tourism agenda, which includes product diversification and expansion into culture and heritage tourism, agro tourism, dams tourism, desert tourism, and growth of the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions segment.

Discussions also focused on strengthening the tourism value chain through community inclusive approaches. Areas highlighted included cultural, lifestyle, sport, adventure, gastronomy and heritage based offerings aimed at encouraging citizen participation and broader economic value.

BTO further noted its use of digital marketing and communication tools, including social media campaigns, digital marketing materials, global market reassurance efforts and the ongoing revamp of its website.

The engagement emphasised collaboration between diplomatic missions and the tourism sector, positioning envoys as representatives of Botswana’s tourism offering, sustainability focus and conservation efforts in international markets.
