Botswana Partners with MIT to Drive Deep Tech Innovation Across Africa. A new chapter in Africa’s innovation story unfolded as 20 pioneering startups from Botswana, Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, and Zimbabwe came together for the Deep Tech Program for Africa — a transformative initiative designed to accelerate the continent’s transition toward knowledge-driven economies.

The six-day intensive program focused on empowering early-stage founders working in advanced science and engineering, helping them turn groundbreaking research into practical solutions that address Africa’s most pressing challenges in health, renewable energy, agriculture, and mining.

Hosted under the MIT Kuo Sharper Center for Prosperity and Entrepreneurship Deep Tech Program for Africa, in collaboration with Material Impact, the initiative marks a historic partnership between the Government of Botswana and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This collaboration reinforces Botswana’s growing role as a hub for science-led entrepreneurship and a catalyst for continental innovation.

Deep tech, which blends cutting-edge scientific research with real-world application, is increasingly seen as vital to Africa’s global competitiveness. However, many promising technologies never reach the market due to limited commercialization knowledge, mentorship, and investor networks. The Deep Tech Program for Africa directly addresses these challenges by offering expert guidance, business development training, and connections to international investors and mentors.
