Botswana Ministry Enforces Stricter School Uniform Import Rules Ahead of New Term. As the new school term approaches, Botswana’s Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship has issued a strict warning regarding the importation of school uniforms, emphasizing the need for compliance with existing regulations. Authorities have indicated that any school clothing imported without the proper permits may be subject to confiscation.

The reminder references Statutory Instrument No. 76 of 2021, which requires all importers of school uniforms to secure valid permits prior to bringing items into the country. The Ministry highlighted that enforcement will be particularly vigilant during the peak uniform season from December to February, a period when demand traditionally rises ahead of the academic year.

In its public notice, the Ministry noted that there have been observed instances of non-compliance with the regulations. The rules cover a wide range of school attire, including tunics, dresses, shirts, pants, tracksuits, as well as accessories such as ties, scarves, and hats for both public and private schools. Uniforms imported without the required approvals will face immediate seizure.

The policy is intended to protect local manufacturers and maintain quality standards for school clothing. Authorities maintain that the regulations ensure the sustainability of domestic production and help uphold consistent uniform quality across schools.

The announcement comes at a critical time for parents, many of whom traditionally purchase more affordable uniforms from neighboring countries or online retailers during the holiday season. While the Ministry emphasizes regulatory compliance, the timing of enforcement has raised concerns among some families about potential increases in costs and limited options.

The Ministry encourages all importers and retailers to verify that their school uniform shipments are fully compliant with Statutory Instrument No. 76 of 2021 to avoid confiscation and disruption to their operations. Authorities continue to monitor the importation process closely as the academic year begins.
