Botswana Launches 500MW Solar Project to Drive Energy Transformation. Botswana is taking a decisive step toward renewable energy development with the implementation of the Maun 500MW solar photovoltaic power plant, a project officiated by President Advocate Duma Boko.
The initiative is a government-to-government collaboration between Botswana and the Sultanate of Oman, forming part of the country’s broader infrastructure strategy to achieve electricity self-sufficiency. The plant is expected to provide clean, affordable, reliable, and adequate energy to support sustainable development while reducing reliance on imported electricity.
Officials highlighted that the project will augment government efforts to accelerate renewable energy adoption, expand electrification, and lower the national carbon footprint. Beyond energy supply, the plant is anticipated to create job opportunities for locals, promote inclusive growth, and strengthen skills development in the renewable energy sector.
The leadership of the North West District welcomed the project, noting its alignment with Maun’s transition into a green city. District Commissioner Mr. Thabang Waloka described the initiative as a large-scale shift from coal to renewable energy, emphasizing its role in improving national energy security and independence.
Mr. Waloka further acknowledged solar energy as a promising solution for meeting growing energy needs, particularly in rural communities. He expressed optimism that as Maun advances its green agenda, the expectation is for a gradual transition toward total reliance on solar energy.
He also underscored the project’s dual impact: reducing dependence on imported electricity while boosting the local economy through employment and enterprise opportunities.
As Botswana accelerates its renewable energy agenda, the Maun solar plant stands as a landmark project, positioning the country toward resilience, sustainability, and a cleaner energy future.
