Botswana Invests in Girolando Cattle to Strengthen Dairy Industry and Boost Local Business. Botswana has taken a significant step toward revitalising its dairy sector, with President Duma Gideon Boko announcing the successful procurement of 1,000 high-quality Girolando cattle from Brazil. This move forms part of the government’s wider agricultural transformation strategy, aimed at increasing local milk production, reducing imports, and strengthening national food security.
The Girolando breed, known for its high milk yields and adaptability to tropical climates, is expected to enhance productivity and empower farmers across the country. President Boko emphasized that the initiative will expand the dairy value chain and create opportunities for smallholder farmers and agribusiness entrepreneurs. “These high-yield dairy breeds will play a key role in boosting milk production and supporting rural livelihoods,” he said during the 2025 State of the Nation Address.
To support farmers, the government will provide veterinary services, training, and access to financing, ensuring proper herd management and optimal milk production. This approach also aims to integrate local farmers into the national dairy market, encouraging youth participation and fostering entrepreneurship in rural communities.
Industry experts note that the increased milk supply will have a ripple effect, opening doors for value-added dairy businesses, including cheese, yoghurt, and powdered milk production. Local entrepreneurs can capitalise on this opportunity, creating jobs and generating new revenue streams while contributing to Botswana’s economic diversification.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security will oversee the phased distribution of the Girolando cattle, ensuring farmers are equipped with the knowledge and resources needed to maximise productivity. With this initiative, Botswana is moving closer to a self-sufficient, modern dairy sector that supports both food security and economic growth.
This strategic investment highlights the government’s commitment to empowering local businesses, modernising agriculture, and driving sustainable development across Botswana.
