Botswana Hosts Inaugural Pandemic Fund Committee Meeting to Bolster Health Emergency Preparedness. Botswana has taken a major step toward strengthening its capacity to respond to health threats exacerbated by climate change by convening the first high-level meeting of its National Steering Committee for the Pandemic Fund initiative.

The meeting, held this morning in Gaborone, marks Botswana’s formal engagement in the regional initiative titled “Strengthening One Health Disease Surveillance and Response in Southern Africa.” This collaborative effort, involving eight countries, aims to improve preparedness through early warning systems, disease surveillance, laboratory readiness, and a trained health workforce.

The initiative adopts a One Health approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health to ensure more comprehensive and effective emergency response mechanisms. The National Steering Committee will play a central role in guiding the development, coordination, and oversight of related activities, ensuring they align with Botswana’s national health priorities and strategies.

Co-chaired by Dr. Fabian Ndenzako, WHO Representative in Botswana, and Dr. Mareko Ramotsababa, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, the committee reflects a multisectoral approach to health governance. Representatives from key government departments, public health institutions, and development partners were present.

Dr. Ndenzako emphasized that regional cooperation, supported by international partners and institutions like the World Health Organization, is critical to improving health security across southern Africa.
