Botswana Hosts First Africa Biodiversity Summit Technical Session to Strengthen Continental Environmental Leadership. Gaborone, Botswana, hosted the Technical Session of the First Africa Biodiversity Summit today, marking a pivotal moment in advancing the continent’s environmental priorities. The session was officially opened by His Excellency Ambassador Miguel César Domingos Bembe, Permanent Representative of Angola to the African Union and UNECA, who is also the Acting Chairperson of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee.
Ambassador Bembe commended the Government and people of Botswana for hosting the continental gathering, highlighting the strategic importance of biodiversity in safeguarding Africa’s sovereignty, food security, and sustainable prosperity. He called on African nations to make concrete, realistic, and measurable commitments that strengthen the continent’s influence in global environmental governance.
The ambassador emphasised the need for unity, determination, and forward-looking strategies among Member States to ensure that the Technical Meeting produces actionable recommendations for the upcoming Summit. He stressed that these outcomes would provide a foundation for Africa to assert leadership in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development initiatives on the global stage.
The session in Gaborone brought together policymakers, technical experts, and stakeholders from across Africa to discuss key environmental challenges and opportunities. Discussions focused on promoting sustainable ecosystems, protecting wildlife habitats, and implementing practical frameworks that balance economic growth with environmental stewardship.
For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and businesses, the Summit presents opportunities to align investment strategies with sustainability goals, explore eco-friendly innovations, and participate in emerging green economies that prioritize environmental resilience. By engaging in continental biodiversity initiatives, private sector actors can contribute to long-term economic and ecological stability while fostering regional collaboration.
