Botswana Highlights Expanding Mineral Potential at Global Mining Gathering. Botswana’s mineral potential took centre stage during the country showcase presentation at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town this week, where industry leaders outlined the nation’s evolving resource landscape.

Speaking at the event, Botswana Geoscience Institute Chief Executive Officer Olefile Cisco Mashabila highlighted the scale and diversity of mineral resources found across Botswana.

He emphasised that the country has built a strong international reputation over decades, particularly through diamond production, while now expanding attention to other mineral opportunities.Botswana sits on highly prospective geological formations, including the Kalahari Copper Belt, where exploration activity continues to grow.

Mashabila said extensive baseline data already exists, supported by regional aeromagnetic surveys and broad geological, geochemical and geophysical information. He noted that the country’s mineral potential spans multiple regions and is supported by accumulated research conducted over many years.

In addition to geological potential, Botswana continues to emphasise governance frameworks and regulatory systems designed to support investment and responsible mining. Mashabila said transparent licensing processes and legislative measures form part of efforts to strengthen sector development and value capture.

He also pointed to the mining cadastre system developed by the Government of Botswana, describing it as a transparent platform designed to improve access to geological information. According to Mashabila, the system supports exploration planning by providing data needed for prospecting and project development.

Addressing potential investors, he encouraged stakeholders to examine available geological datasets and consider opportunities within Botswana’s mineral sector.

The presentation formed part of the country’s broader effort to communicate resource potential to global industry participants attending the event. Mashabila emphasised that mineral resources must be developed through targeted exploration supported by governance and regulatory stability. He stated that coordinated policy, data access and structured oversight remain central to the country’s long term mining development objectives. Global attention now turns toward developments.
