Botswana Explores Horse Racing as Emerging Sports Tourism OOpportunity. Stakeholders in Botswana’s horse racing and tourism sectors gathered in Maun today for a training workshop aimed at strengthening the role of horse racing as both a cultural activity and a sports tourism product.
The workshop was convened by the Botswana Horse Racing Association in partnership with TT Horse Racing, with support from the Botswana Tourism Organisation. The session focused on strategies to elevate horse racing from a largely informal activity into a more structured sector that can contribute to tourism development and local economic activity.
Participants noted that horse racing has long-standing historical roots in many rural communities across Botswana. Despite this heritage, the sport has remained underdeveloped, with limited formal structures and infrastructure. Discussions highlighted the potential benefits of formalising the sector and linking it more closely to the national tourism value chain.
Representing the Botswana Tourism Organisation, Mr Oteng Ndlovu said the organisation recognises sports tourism as an important area of growth. He noted that horse racing represents an underutilised opportunity that could attract visitors while encouraging community participation and showcasing elements of Botswana’s cultural identity.
Workshop discussions explored several areas considered important for the development of the sport. These included the establishment of annual horse racing festivals, improvements to racing infrastructure, and initiatives to build local skills and organisational capacity. Participants also discussed ways to position Botswana as a distinctive equestrian destination within the region.
The session provided a platform for engagement between racing organisers, tourism officials and other stakeholders to exchange ideas and identify practical steps toward strengthening the sector. The emphasis was placed on collaboration and long-term planning rather than short-term activities.
The workshop concluded ahead of the Premier Champions Horse Race Cup scheduled to take place in Maun tomorrow. The upcoming event was highlighted as a significant moment for local horse racing stakeholders and a potential reference point for future efforts to promote horse racing within Botswana’s tourism landscape.
