Botswana Explores Advanced Rail Systems During Technical Visit to India’s Banaras Locomotive Works. Botswana has taken a closer look at modern rail technology as part of its ongoing assessment of options to strengthen and upgrade national transport infrastructure. Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Noah Salakae, recently conducted a technical visit to Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) in Varanasi, India, a major locomotive manufacturing facility with a strong international footprint.

The visit focused on BLW’s full locomotive production process, from design and engineering to assembly and quality assurance. Particular attention was given to the manufacturer’s electric locomotive portfolio, including the WAP-7 passenger locomotive and the WAG-9 freight engine, both of which are widely used within India’s rail system and recognised for their performance standards.

During the tour, Minister Salakae received briefings on production workflows, testing procedures and engineering systems used to ensure reliability and operational efficiency. The engagement also covered developments in rail manufacturing aimed at improving energy efficiency, lowering lifecycle costs and extending asset longevity.

BLW showcased its capacity to produce locomotives at scale, supported by automated systems and specialised engineering processes. The discussions further highlighted approaches to maintaining consistency in manufacturing while meeting the technical requirements of different rail networks.

The visit forms part of Botswana’s broader review of rail infrastructure and rolling stock options, as the country considers how rail can support economic activity and logistics efficiency. Rail transport remains a key component of Botswana’s transport mix, particularly for bulk cargo and long-distance freight movement.

Formerly known as Diesel Locomotive Works, BLW has expanded its manufacturing capabilities over time and now produces electric locomotives for domestic use and export markets. The facility has supplied locomotives to several countries, including Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Mozambique, demonstrating its role in international rail supply chains.

Minister Salakae’s visit provided an opportunity to observe established rail manufacturing practices and engage directly with technical experts. The engagement reflects Botswana’s interest in understanding global rail technologies as it evaluates future infrastructure priorities within the transport sector.
