Botswana Deepens Technology Partnerships with Japan to Accelerate Industrial Growth. Botswana is strengthening its economic ties with Japan as part of its drive to advance national transformation and diversify the economy. The upcoming official visit by the Minister of Finance, Ndaba Gaolathe, from 23 to 29 November 2025 marks an important step in expanding collaboration between the two nations, particularly in high-tech and high-value industries.

The visit takes place under the Strategic Exchanges on a Practical Level Programme, following an invitation from the government of Japan. It builds on positive momentum created at TICAD 9, where Botswana reinforced its position as an emerging investment destination driven by innovation and long-term stability. Since then, interest from major Japanese companies such as Toyota Tsusho, AIBOS, and SOLAFUNE has increased, with exploratory teams already assessing opportunities within Botswana’s priority sectors.

The mission also aligns with Botswana’s recently adopted Botswana Economic Transformation Plan and National Development Plan 12. These key frameworks outline a renewed vision for an export-led, digitally enabled, and globally competitive economy. Their focus on advanced manufacturing, green industrialisation, skills development, and digital transformation has positioned Botswana for stronger partnerships with countries whose technological capabilities can support this shift.

During his time in Japan, Minister Gaolathe is expected to hold engagements with ministries, financial institutions, and multinational corporations. Discussions will revolve around potential collaboration in areas such as automotive manufacturing, renewable and green technologies, digital innovation, healthcare systems, and large-scale infrastructure development. The aim is to attract high-quality investment, deepen technology transfer, and support job creation across sectors that can contribute to long-term structural change.

Botswana and Japan have shared a strong relationship since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1966. Japan has played a key role in supporting Botswana’s development priorities, including infrastructure financing, technology transfer, skills training, and university partnerships facilitated by JICA. Collaborative efforts have also extended to power infrastructure, geological remote-sensing work, and community-level programmes.

As Botswana strengthens its presence in the global economy, Japan remains a strategic partner whose advanced technology and investment expertise align with Botswana’s next phase of industrialisation and economic transformation.
