Botswana Artists Gain Global Visibility at G20-Aligned Pan African Art Exhibition. Botswana’s creative sector received global attention as the works of artists Pako Lesejane and Totang Motoloki were featured in a pan African contemporary art exhibition held alongside the G20 Summit. The showcase formed part of an initiative by the Latitudes Centre for the Arts (LCA) to highlight African artistic expression within a major international gathering.

The exhibition brought together artists from 12 African countries, offering a continental snapshot of contemporary creativity. It served as a platform for global audiences to engage with a wide range of visual styles, narratives and cultural perspectives rooted in African experiences.

Botswana’s participation was facilitated by Ora Loapi, who represented the country in the initiative. During the presentation, Loapi emphasised the importance of connecting local artists with global markets. This alignment comes at a moment when international interest in the creative economy continues to grow, reflected in UNCTAD’s 2024 valuation estimating the global creative market at at least USD 1.5 trillion.

Among the artists showcased, Pako Lesejane presented a series of landscape and fine art photographs. His work is known for blending natural scenery with experimental approaches that expand the boundaries of traditional photographic storytelling. His inclusion in the exhibition offered an opportunity to present Botswana’s natural environment and visual identity to a diverse international audience.

Totang Motoloki contributed paintings centred on shared human experiences. His work is distinguished by the use of repurposed and discarded materials, which he transforms into multi layered pieces reflecting themes of memory, identity and resilience. His creative process highlights the connections between personal histories and broader social narratives.

The exhibition provided Botswana’s creatives with exposure in a high profile setting, reinforcing ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s presence in global cultural and creative industries.
