Botswana and UNIDO Deepen Industrialisation Partnership. Botswana has taken another step toward accelerating industrialisation and economic transformation following a high‑level engagement between Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Gaolathe and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The courtesy call, held on the sidelines of international development engagements, brought Gaolathe together with UNIDO Deputy to the Director General and Managing Director Fatou Haidara to explore opportunities for collaboration in advancing Botswana’s industrial development agenda.

Discussions focused on priorities central to Botswana’s economic diversification efforts, including industrial competitiveness, innovation, skills development, investment promotion, and sustainable growth. The engagement comes as Botswana intensifies efforts to reduce reliance on diamonds and create new engines of growth through manufacturing, value addition, and industrial expansion.

UNIDO highlighted areas of potential cooperation under its Approach for Africa framework, which emphasizes investing in people and communities, boosting industrial productivity, strengthening regional integration through the AfCFTA, advancing sustainable energy solutions, climate action, and promoting innovative financing mechanisms. These priorities align closely with Botswana’s aspirations of building a resilient, knowledge‑driven, and globally competitive economy.

As a key outcome, Botswana and UNIDO agreed to establish a joint working team to drive implementation of agreed areas of cooperation and translate discussions into tangible programmes and projects. UNIDO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Botswana’s long‑term development objectives, signalling stronger collaboration in the pursuit of sustainable industrial growth.

Vice President Gaolathe is currently in Vienna to participate in the OPEC Fund’s 50th Anniversary and Development Forum 2026. He is expected to proceed to Cape Town for the 56th Southern African Customs Union (SACU) Council of Ministers’ Meeting, where regional trade and integration will feature prominently.
