Botswana and Malawi Seal Trade and Fisheries Pacts to Boost Regional Business Cooperation. Botswana and Malawi have taken a significant step toward strengthening regional economic cooperation with the signing of two Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) aimed at promoting trade, investment, and sustainable development.
The agreements were concluded during President Duma Gideon Boko’s state visit to Malawi, where he met with President Lazarus Chakwera. The visit focused on deepening bilateral relations and exploring practical avenues for collaboration between the two Southern African nations.
One of the MOUs centers on aquaculture development and inland fisheries management. This agreement commits both countries to sustainable fisheries practices, with a focus on improving food security and empowering local communities—particularly youth and women. The plan includes initiatives around climate-smart aquaculture, technical capacity building, and joint research. A dedicated technical committee will monitor implementation to ensure progress and accountability.
The second agreement, signed between the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) and the Malawi Investment and Trade Centre (MITC), aims to facilitate business-to-business engagement. It promotes the exchange of trade and investment data, regulatory insights, and coordinated participation in trade missions and exhibitions. Both agencies will work to identify high-growth sectors and mobilize private sector participation in cross-border projects.
The symbolism of the partnership was reflected in a lighthearted exchange between the two leaders, with President Chakwera expressing a desire to see Malawi’s Kilombero rice served in Gaborone, and President Boko welcoming Malawian consumers to Botswana’s premium beef products.
For Botswana entrepreneurs and businesses, the MOUs represent new potential for collaboration in agriculture, food processing, logistics, and trade services. As implementation unfolds, the agreements are expected to unlock regional value chains and create a more interconnected business environment across Southern Africa.
