Botswana and India Formalise Railway Cooperation Through RITES MoU. Botswana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RITES Limited of India, marking a new phase of cooperation in the development of railway and transport infrastructure. The agreement was announced by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and is aimed at supporting the modernisation of Botswana’s rail systems and related infrastructure.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Noah Salakae and the High Commissioner of India to Botswana, H.E. Bharath Kumar Kuthati. The Ministry described the agreement as a significant step in Botswana’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its transport sector and improve connectivity.
RITES Limited is India’s state-owned transport infrastructure consultancy and engineering company. Under the MoU, Botswana will draw on RITES’ technical expertise to support railway modernisation initiatives, the development of transport infrastructure and the delivery of integrated train operations.
The agreement also places emphasis on strengthening local technical capacity. Areas of cooperation outlined in the MoU include the provision of quality assurance services and the deployment of information technology solutions intended to improve efficiency, safety and reliability within the rail sector.
According to the Ministry, the partnership is expected to support broader objectives related to economic development. Rail infrastructure is viewed as an important component of transport systems that facilitate trade, industrial activity and mobility. Strengthening this sector is intended to support service delivery and enhance accessibility for communities across the country.
The Ministry noted that modern and efficient transport infrastructure plays a critical role in national development planning. By collaborating with RITES Limited, Botswana aims to establish a framework that supports technical excellence and long-term infrastructure planning.
Officials expressed confidence that the MoU will contribute to building a more resilient and future-ready transport sector. The agreement aligns with Botswana’s broader development ambitions and reflects ongoing efforts to engage international partners in infrastructure development initiatives.
The MoU sets out a cooperative framework and provides a basis for future engagement between Botswana and RITES Limited in railway and transport infrastructure development.
