Botswana and De Beers Deepen Skills Pipeline Through New Education Partnership. The partnership between De Beers Group and the Ministry of Higher Education marks a new step toward strengthening skills development in Botswana. The organisations have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at aligning education systems with industry needs and expanding human capital capacity.

The agreement forms part of talent development commitments linked to the Botswana–De Beers agreement signed in February last year. Prince Maele described the initiative as an investment in long term economic transformation rather than a routine institutional arrangement. He said the partnership reflects a national focus on building capabilities that support future competitiveness across evolving industries.

According to the Minister the country’s growth will increasingly depend on skills innovation and citizen empowerment as beneficiation activities expand across the diamond value chain. These activities include sorting valuing cutting polishing and jewellery manufacturing which continue to develop locally alongside broader industrial participation.

The Memorandum establishes structured pathways for high performing students to access internships mentorship research collaboration and potential employment opportunities within De Beers operations. It also extends across universities colleges of education technical and vocational institutions and related training entities under the Ministry framework.

The collaboration aims to support the development of engineers scientists digital specialists technicians researchers and entrepreneurs prepared to contribute to industrial expansion. It further emphasises stronger research partnerships and curriculum alignment to ensure education systems reflect changing industry requirements.

Speaking at the signing ceremony Thabile Moipolai said the partnership recognises that competitive advantage is increasingly shaped by skills rather than resources alone. She noted that expanding technical digital and commercial capabilities will be essential as industry participation broadens across multiple stages of production.

Both parties indicated that continued collaboration will support education institutions in preparing graduates for evolving industrial demands and long term national development goals. Implementation will proceed steadily.
