Botswana and Angola Highlight Lobito Corridor Cooperation During Diplomatic Farewell. Botswana and Angola have reaffirmed their economic partnership with a focus on cooperation linked to the Lobito Corridor, during a farewell courtesy call by outgoing Angolan Ambassador Dr Beatriz Morais on President Duma Boko.
During the meeting, President Boko acknowledged Dr Morais for her role in advancing bilateral relations through diplomatic engagement. He noted Botswana’s appreciation for Angola’s continued goodwill, including the allocation of a 30 percent stake associated with the Lobito Corridor framework, as referenced during discussions between the two countries.
The partnership between Botswana and Angola also includes cooperation in the diamond sector as well as broader trade development efforts. These areas have been identified as part of ongoing engagement aimed at strengthening economic ties.
The Lobito Corridor is a rail and logistics initiative led by Angola and supported by the United States and the European Union. The project links the Port of Lobito on Angola’s Atlantic coast to the Central African Copperbelt, providing a route intended to facilitate the movement of goods to international markets.
For Botswana, the corridor presents a potential Atlantic export pathway through regional rail connections via Zambia and the Kazungula Bridge. The route is seen as part of wider regional infrastructure networks designed to enhance connectivity between Southern and Central Africa.
As Ambassador Morais concludes her tenure, Botswana expressed confidence that the groundwork laid in infrastructure cooperation, energy-related engagement, and regional connectivity will continue to support trade and investment links between the two countries.
The farewell meeting underscored the diplomatic and economic ties between Gaborone and Luanda, with both sides highlighting the importance of sustained collaboration in projects that strengthen regional integration.
