Botswana Accelerates Mega Projects After Maun Solar Breakthrough. President Duma Boko has signaled a decisive shift toward rapid implementation of Botswana’s transformative infrastructure projects, following the groundbreaking of the landmark 500MW Maun Solar and Battery Storage Project.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebrations of the Botswana National Front (BNF), Boko emphasized that bureaucratic delays have long frustrated investors and hindered growth. “The people of this country do not have time to wait. Any process, mindset, or system that inhibits swift and agile execution must cease to exist,” he declared.

The Maun solar project, conceived in 2025, represents Botswana’s largest renewable energy development to date. With an estimated investment exceeding BWP 28 billion, it is expected to diversify the economy, create thousands of jobs, and strengthen energy security. The initiative gained momentum through high-level engagements with the Oman Investment Authority and the Government of Oman, culminating in groundbreaking on April 16, 2026.

Boko underscored that efficiency and delivery are central to his administration, which took office in October 2024. He pointed to Egypt as a benchmark for investment speed, contrasting Botswana’s historically slow processes with Egypt’s ability to move projects from evaluation to deployment within days.

Beyond energy, Boko has turned his attention to long-delayed rail projects. The Trans-Kalahari Railway (TKR), linking Botswana’s coal-rich interior to Namibia’s Walvis Bay port, has stalled for over a decade despite bilateral agreement. Boko confirmed that he and Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah have agreed to accelerate the project, citing its potential to generate thousands of jobs.

He also highlighted the strategic importance of the Mosetse–Kazungula–Livingstone railway line, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity with Zambia and beyond. “This is not just infrastructure; it is an economic lifeline. Every delay carries a real cost in lost opportunities and livelihoods,” Boko said.
