BOTASH Soda Ash Donation Strengthens Biosecurity Measures Against FMD. Botswana’s livestock protection efforts have received additional support after Botswana Ash (Pty) Ltd donated 60 tonnes of soda ash valued at P197,700 to assist national Foot and Mouth Disease prevention measures.
The contribution forms part of wider biosecurity preparations coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture following a warning about increased disease risks linked to neighbouring South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Soda ash is used as a biosecurity agent, with its alkaline properties helping to neutralise the Foot and Mouth Disease virus on surfaces including livestock enclosures, transport vehicles, equipment and veterinary control points.
Its application supports hygiene management, strengthens movement control procedures and reinforces containment measures at border posts and regional access routes where monitoring and sanitation practices are critical.
Authorities have emphasised that enhanced surface disinfection and strict control of animal movement are essential components of preventing outbreaks and limiting transmission where exposure risks may arise.
By supplying large volumes of soda ash, the company’s donation is expected to strengthen ongoing hygiene protocols and support coordinated disease prevention activities across affected regions.
The initiative reflects cooperation between government and industry aimed at protecting Botswana’s livestock sector, which plays an important role in supporting rural livelihoods and maintaining agricultural stability.
Officials have indicated that strengthening preventive measures remains a priority as national authorities and private sector partners continue working to manage risks associated with cross border livestock movement.
The soda ash donation forms part of ongoing collaboration designed to reinforce biosecurity readiness and ensure resources are available to respond effectively to disease threats when they emerge.
Through coordinated planning and resource mobilisation, stakeholders aim to safeguard animal health, maintain production continuity and protect economic activity linked to livestock across the country nationally overall.
