BMC Strengthens Global Reach with Halal and BRCGS CCertifications. The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) has announced two major certifications that mark a significant advancement in its global market presence and reaffirm Botswana’s position as a reliable supplier of premium beef.
For the first time, BMC’s Maun abattoir has earned Halal certification, while the Lobatse plant has successfully retained its BRCGS Grade AA rating, one of the highest international benchmarks for food safety and quality management.
These dual recognitions are a major step forward for BMC’s export strategy, broadening access to new international markets while reinforcing trust in established ones. The Halal certification opens opportunities in Muslim-majority and faith-conscious markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. Meanwhile, the BRCGS certification, aligned with the Global Food Safety Initiative, confirms the Commission’s commitment to the highest standards in food safety, product integrity, and traceability.
BMC’s leadership commended the achievement as a milestone in operational excellence, crediting collaboration with the Government of Botswana, local cattle producers, and the Department of Veterinary Services for sustaining the industry’s strong reputation.
The accomplishment comes as BMC intensifies its export diversification efforts and continues to invest in major infrastructure developments — including a US$17 million modern processing facility in Lobatse, aimed at enhancing value addition within Botswana’s beef supply chain.
Additionally, the Commission recently secured regulatory approvals to export beef to the United Arab Emirates, expanding its footprint into high-value Gulf and Asian markets.
