BMC Highlights Regional Collaboration Opportunities Following Lesotho Prime Minister’s Visit. The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) has confirmed growing prospects for collaboration with the Kingdom of Lesotho following an official visit by Lesotho’s Prime Minister, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, to President Advocate Duma Boko. The engagement positioned Lesotho as a potential strategic partner in livestock development, animal health and beef processing.
As part of his visit, Prime Minister Matekane toured two parastatal entities under the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture: the Botswana Vaccine Institute (BVI) and the Botswana Meat Commission. Both institutions are central to Botswana’s agricultural ecosystem, contributing to animal health management, vaccine development and the country’s well-established beef value chain.
The discussions come at a time when Botswana is accelerating its agricultural transformation efforts. Current priorities include strengthening regional food security, improving livestock productivity and enhancing cross-border cooperation in areas such as vaccine research and sustainable beef production.
During the tour, BMC presented the Prime Minister with premium Botswana Beef, symbolising the sector’s strong regional and international reputation. Botswana Beef continues to draw demand across export markets due to its consistently high standards and traceability systems.
BMC stated that investment opportunities across the beef value chain are expanding, particularly in areas such as cattle production, processing infrastructure, logistics and value-added beef products. According to the Commission, this growth trajectory supports wider economic benefits, including increased earnings for local farmers and improved livelihoods for communities participating in the sector.
The institution further reiterated its commitment to advancing Botswana Beef’s market presence through export growth, operational efficiency and stronger diversification efforts. As engagement between Botswana and Lesotho progresses, BMC sees the potential for deeper cooperation that could strengthen regional agricultural competitiveness.
