BMC Advances P230 Million Processing Plant Project in Lobatse. The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) has confirmed steady progress on the construction of its P230 million meat value-addition and secondary processing plant at the Lobatse abattoir. The project is set to replace the ageing ECCO Cannery plant, which has been in operation since 1978, marking a significant step in modernising BMC’s operations.

The new facility is designed to support vertical integration within BMC’s business model and enhance its competitiveness in both domestic and export markets. Once completed, the plant is projected to generate an additional P350 million in annual turnover and deliver a return on investment within two years of operation.

Construction is being undertaken by China Jiangsu International Botswana under a Design and Build Model, with AMA Projects serving as project manager. At its peak, the project has created employment for approximately 135 people, contributing to the local economy during the build phase. Once operational, the facility is expected to provide 40 to 60 permanent jobs.

Lobatse Town Council deputy mayor, Mr. Legodile Mothibi, has confirmed that the project has reached 34 percent completion and remains on track for its scheduled handover in June 2026.

For Botswana’s agribusiness sector, the development of the plant signals new opportunities for value chain expansion and improved product diversification. With modern processing capacity, BMC aims to strengthen its role as a key player in Botswana’s beef industry while maintaining quality standards that meet international market requirements.

As the project takes shape, it underscores the potential of infrastructure investment to reinforce Botswana’s long-standing reputation in the global beef market, while also providing jobs and driving business activity in Lobatse.
