BIUST Suspends Operations Following Student SStrike. The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) has been closed until further notice, effective 0900hrs on February 5, 2026. The decision was communicated in a memorandum issued by Vice Chancellor Professor Otlogetswe Totolo.
According to the notice, all students were instructed to vacate the university premises by 0930hrs on the same day. Students were also directed to return all university property in their possession, including room keys and mobile internet devices, by 1000hrs.
The temporary closure follows a student strike at the institution. The action by students is linked to concerns over outstanding student debt related to retake modules, as well as maintenance issues at student residences. These matters prompted disruptions that led to the university suspending its operations.
The memorandum did not specify how long the closure would remain in effect, stating only that the institution would be closed “until further notice.” No details were provided regarding alternative academic arrangements or revised timelines for the academic calendar.
Students affected by the closure are expected to comply with the instructions outlined in the notice, particularly regarding the return of university property. The directive applies to all students residing on campus as well as those who may have institutional equipment in their possession.
BIUST, located in Palapye, is one of Botswana’s key institutions focused on science, engineering and technology education. The closure marks a significant interruption to academic activities, with further updates anticipated from university management once the situation is addressed
University authorities have not yet released additional information on engagements with student representatives or the steps being taken to resolve the issues raised during the strike.
