BIUST and MIT Launch Groundbreaking Innovation Programmes to Boost Botswana’s Entrepreneurial Ecosystem. The Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) is set to take a major leap in entrepreneurship and innovation following the announcement of two new programmes developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Faculty representatives from MIT’s Kuo Sharper Centre for Prosperity and Entrepreneurship and the MIT Sandbox Initiative will visit BIUST from 25–26 June 2025 to finalise the rollout.

The collaboration is part of a five-year Botswana–MIT strategic partnership and marks a key step in strengthening Botswana’s knowledge economy. The new programmes—the MIT Student Entrepreneurship Fellowship Programme and the MIT Sandbox Programme—will officially launch in August 2025 under BIUST’s School of Business and Professional Development.

The Fellowship Programme will be a competitive, year-long opportunity open to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Participants will undergo intensive skills training, receive mentorship, engage with startup ecosystems both locally and internationally, and build real businesses before graduation.

Meanwhile, the MIT Sandbox Programme will provide seed funding of approximately USD1,000 per team, along with mentorship from MIT and BIUST experts. Students will also gain access to legal, intellectual property, and investor readiness resources. The first cohort will begin in 2025, with plans to scale in subsequent years.

For Botswana’s entrepreneurs and businesses, this initiative presents new opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and access to early-stage talent and ideas. It aligns with the country’s broader goals of economic diversification, job creation, and technological advancement.
