BITC CEO Identifies Poor Implementation as Botswana’s Biggest Investment CChallenge. Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) chief executive officer Keletsositse Olebile says Botswana’s main challenge in improving its investment climate is implementing existing ideas and opportunities effectively.
Speaking on The Juice 2.0 podcast at the Business Botswana National Business Conference, Olebile called for stronger coordination among stakeholders to improve the country’s attractiveness as an investment destination.
He said Botswana had ideas and potential investment opportunities, but translating these into tangible results remained a major challenge. He emphasised the need to move beyond discussions and focus on putting proposed solutions into practice.
Olebile also addressed investor concerns about permit processes and lengthy service turnaround times, saying these complaints often reflected wider systemic challenges that required cooperation between government institutions and other stakeholders.
He argued that improving the investment environment would require coordinated efforts to address administrative processes, introduce legislative changes where necessary and strengthen collaboration across institutions.
According to Olebile, Botswana has spent years discussing solutions to challenges affecting its investment climate. He said the priority should now be ensuring that these proposals are implemented effectively.
He further observed that other countries had adopted ideas originating in Botswana and put them into practice more successfully, highlighting the importance of execution in achieving results. His remarks placed implementation and institutional coordination at the centre of efforts to improve the country’s competitiveness in attracting investment.
For investors, processes such as obtaining permits and accessing government services form part of the experience of doing business in a country. Olebile’s comments pointed to the need for stakeholders to address these challenges collectively rather than treating them as isolated administrative problems.
The BITC chief executive’s comments at the national business conference highlighted a shift in focus from identifying opportunities to delivering practical outcomes.
