Beware of Fake “Account On Hold” Messages: FNB Botswana Warns of New Scam Attempt. FNB Botswana has issued an urgent warning to customers regarding a new scam that is circulating via text messages. The fraudulent SMS claims that a customer’s account has been “placed on hold” due to an outdated app and urges the recipient to click on a link to update their information.
According to the bank, this message is not legitimate and is part of a phishing attempt designed to steal sensitive banking information. FNB Botswana has confirmed that it does not request banking details, PINs, or login credentials through SMS, WhatsApp, or social media platforms.
“This is a scam. We urge all customers to remain vigilant and to avoid clicking on suspicious links or providing personal information to unverified sources,” the bank stated in a public notice released on Monday.
The fake message has reportedly been sent to various mobile users in the country, some of whom may not have active FNB accounts. The link in the SMS leads to a lookalike site designed to collect usernames, passwords, and PINs.
FNB Botswana has also encouraged customers to use the bank’s official app for security tips and to stay updated on current fraud alerts.
