A1 Highway Upgrade Opens Doors for Private Sector Participation Through P10 Billion PPP. Botswana’s infrastructure development drive has taken a major step forward with the announcement of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) opportunity for the upgrade of the A1 Highway. President Advocate Duma Boko made the announcement during a Kgotla meeting in Ramotswa, outlining plans for a comprehensive transformation of the country’s busiest transport corridor.
The project, estimated to cost over P10 billion, will see the A1 Highway upgraded to a dual carriageway with enhanced safety and design standards. The scope includes road widening, installation of lighting systems, and fencing to prevent stray animals from entering the road—an issue that has long posed safety risks to motorists.
“We want to upgrade the road, make it a dual carriageway, install lighting, and erect demarcation fences along the route. There will be no stray animals on the A1, and we will achieve this with private sector investment,” President Boko said.
The PPP model invites private investors to collaborate with the government on the funding, construction, and maintenance of the upgraded highway. This approach is expected to attract both local and international players, offering entrepreneurs, developers, and infrastructure firms a chance to contribute to a national priority project.
For Botswana-based businesses, this is a rare opportunity to participate in a large-scale infrastructure project that aligns with national development goals. The initiative is set to create jobs, improve road safety, and enhance transport efficiency across the country’s key economic corridor.
