BITC Engages Cheetah Cement on Gaborone Plant Expansion PPlans. The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) has engaged Cheetah Cement on its operations and expansion plans during a familiarisation visit to the company’s Matsiloje facility.
BITC Chief Executive Officer Keletsositse Olebile, accompanied by members of management, visited the cement producer where he was received by its newly appointed CEO, Mr Wang, and his management team.
The engagement provided an opportunity for BITC to gain insight into Cheetah Cement’s operations, growth prospects and investment challenges, while strengthening communication between the investment facilitation agency and the company.
During the visit, Wang highlighted an improvement in Cheetah Cement’s performance in 2026 after the company experienced operational and market challenges following the start of its operations in 2021.
The company currently employs 41 Batswana and has also undertaken corporate social responsibility initiatives as part of its contribution to surrounding communities.
A key focus of the engagement was Cheetah Cement’s plans to develop a new cement plant in Gaborone. The proposed facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 800,000 tonnes.
According to the information provided during the engagement, the project is expected to create additional employment opportunities and strengthen local manufacturing capacity, while reducing reliance on imported cement. Olebile emphasised the importance of strengthening local value chains, including through domestic sourcing of raw materials.
He also reaffirmed BITC’s commitment to facilitating the resolution of outstanding regulatory and infrastructure challenges that could affect the timely implementation of the proposed project.
Wang expressed appreciation for BITC’s investment facilitation support and reaffirmed the company’s confidence in Botswana as an investment destination.
The visit concluded with a guided tour of Cheetah Cement’s Matsiloje production facility, giving the BITC delegation an opportunity to observe the company’s operations.
The engagement forms part of BITC’s investment aftercare activities and comes as Cheetah Cement outlines plans to expand its production capacity through the proposed Gaborone plant.
