Bank of Botswana to Examine Capital Markets Role in Scaling Fintech SStartups. The Bank of Botswana will host a panel discussion examining how capital markets can help fintech startups move from regulatory sandboxes to sustainable growth and commercial scale.
The session forms part of the 2026 Fintech Festival and is scheduled for 23 October 2026. It will focus on the role of vibrant and competitive capital markets in supporting fintech businesses as they progress beyond the sandbox stage.
The discussion will consider the funding pathways available to fintech startups and the conditions required to improve access to private capital in Botswana.
Participants will also examine policy and regulatory interventions, market infrastructure and other factors that could support the development and scaling of fintech businesses.
The panel will be moderated by Nenguba Chakalisa, Deputy Director of the Financial Markets Department at the Bank of Botswana. Panelists include Aobakwe Aupa Monyatsi, Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Stock Exchange; Thenjiwe Stephen, Manager for Capital Markets at the Non-Bank Financial Institutions Regulatory Authority; and Bafana Molomo, Managing Director of Aleyo Capital.
The panel is expected to explore the relationship between fintech innovation and Botswana’s capital markets, with particular attention to startups that have developed or tested products within regulatory sandboxes.
Regulatory sandboxes provide a framework for eligible businesses to test innovative financial products or services within a controlled environment. The upcoming discussion will consider what financing and market conditions may be needed once such businesses seek to expand their operations.
The session will form part of the Bank of Botswana’s 2026 Fintech Festival programme and will bring together representatives with experience in financial markets, regulation, the stock exchange and investment.
The discussion will also address how market infrastructure and regulatory frameworks can influence the availability of funding for fintech startups seeking to grow.
