Botswana Begins 100km A3 Upgrade to Strengthen Northern Trade CCorridor. Work has started on the reconstruction and upgrading of a 100-kilometre section of Botswana’s A3 highway between Nata and Gweta, with the project aimed at improving a key transport route. The project is being led by HSNV Group, which has been appointed as the development manager. It also includes improvements to an access road serving Tsokotshaa.
According to the Ministry of Road and Infrastructure, the upgrades are expected to improve safety for road users and reduce vehicle damage associated with potholes and deteriorating road conditions.
The A3 is an important transport route connecting parts of northern Botswana and supporting the movement of people, goods and livestock. The highway also plays a role in the country’s tourism sector and cattle movement.
Its importance extends beyond the communities located along the route, as the A3 connects with major regional transport infrastructure, including the Kazungula Bridge and the Trans-Kalahari Corridor.
The reconstruction project therefore forms part of efforts to improve road infrastructure along a route that supports domestic and regional movement.
The Ministry of Road and Infrastructure said the improvements will contribute to safer travel while addressing road conditions that have affected vehicles using the route.
The inclusion of the Tsokotshaa access road also forms part of the project scope. The A3 upgrade comes as Botswana continues efforts to improve its road infrastructure across the country. The government has stated that improving the national road network remains a priority.
For businesses and other road users relying on the Nata-Gweta route, the project is focused on addressing the condition of the existing highway while strengthening infrastructure along the corridor.
