BSE Targets Stronger Financial Journalism Through Capital Markets WWorkshop. The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) has stepped up efforts to strengthen financial journalism and improve public understanding of capital markets through a media briefing and reporting workshop.
The engagement brought together journalists and BSE leadership to provide greater insight into the Exchange, its strategic direction and Botswana’s broader capital markets. The initiative also focused on encouraging accurate and informed reporting that can contribute to investor confidence.
BSE Board Chairperson Neo Mooki outlined the Board’s mandate under the Exchange’s 10x by 2030 strategy, highlighting capital markets literacy as an important component of improving media credibility and public understanding of investment.
BSE Chief Executive Officer Aupa Monyatsi presented the Exchange’s strategic plan, which is built around five key pillars: Internationalisation, Product Innovation, Technology Modernisation, Talent and Culture, and Force for Good.
Departmental heads also provided journalists with additional information on how the strategic priorities are being implemented across the organisation.
The workshop included an academic perspective on financial reporting, with University of Botswana academics Dr Gopolang Ditlhokwa and Dr Last Alfandika guiding journalists on the use of academic research and evidence when developing news reports.
The academics also addressed the distinction between factual reporting, commentary and opinion, providing guidance aimed at supporting responsible financial journalism.
Journalists took part in a practical exercise focused on developing a market story from source material through to publication. The exercise provided an opportunity to apply the reporting principles discussed during the engagement.
The BSE said continued engagement with journalists is important to building a financially informed investing public and supporting the development of a deeper, more accessible and trusted capital market in Botswana.
